My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 (Japanese: 山田くんとLv999の恋をする Hepburn: Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi o Suru, formerly known as Loving Yamada at Lv999!) is a Japanese shōjo manga series written and illustrated by Mashiro. It has been serialized in GANMA! (published by Comic Smart) and in print by Media Factory since March 7, 2019.[1] The tankōbon (collected volumes) are published by KADOKAWA.[2] This work is Mashiro's first serialized manga.[2]
As of December 2022, the cumulative number of copies printed for the tankōbon has reached 2 million copies.[3]

Synopsis
After her boyfriend cheats on her with another girl they met in the game, Akane Kinoshita learns the hard way that gamer boyfriends can be just as bad as real life ones. As she vents her anger by beating up monsters in a video game, she has a chance encounter with Akito Yamada, a fellow guild member with an afro and a Noh mask. Yamada is unsociable and curt, and he’s not the kind of person who makes Akane fall in love. However, while his game stats may be tops, Yamada is inexperienced in matters of the heart, and against all odds, she finds herself attracted to him. History
Mashiro wrote this work with the intention of creating something enjoyable for both people who like shoujo manga and those who enjoy elements of online gaming. When she first started the serialization, their initial concept was a "romance manga," but she was unsure whether they should emphasize the "game elements."[4]
The concept of the game depicted in the story is based on a slightly nostalgic MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game, taking references from MMOs of the past decade, while the specific details were drawn from a game that Mashiro used to be deeply engrossed in. Mashiro believed that even if people who were not interested in games couldn't relate to it, it wouldn't be a problem as long as they could enjoy the main storyline. However, since they love shoujo manga and is skilled in that genre, the story started to develop more towards a romance manga direction around the third volume.
During the collaboration with Nanao, Mashiro described the dynamic between the characters as an "exquisite balance of being close yet not quite together."[5]
About The Characters
Mashiro believes that the popularity of the series, including its 4th place win in the "Next Manga Awards," is largely due to Yamada.[4] Yamada is an actual person, and Mashiro aimed to create a character who gives the illusion of being able to engage in a pseudo-romance, drawing inspiration from real boys and portraying him with a sense of realism.[4] Yamada's behavior and words were influenced by the boys Mashiro used to play internet games with, and he was intentionally designed to be "difficult to conquer," reflecting Mashiro's desire for male characters.[4]
Akane is depicted as the "girl living next door," someone who is hard to approach and whose true nature is not well understood. Mashiro chose to write Akane with this distance, believing that it is better to have that kind of distance rather than exerting control over her character.[4]
Runa was a character created on the spot, and Mashiro struggled with how to wrap up Runa's story in the second volume since it was added hastily.[4] Mashiro expressed regret for not being able to fully portray Runa in the main story and mentioned that they were glad to have drawn her in the bonus manga of the second volume.[4]
Additionally, Eita and Kamota are characters created spontaneously. Eita was added because Mashiro felt that having only Akane and Yamada as main characters was lacking in terms of character diversity, while Kamota was created because Mashiro felt that the offline meeting was lacking in liveliness.[4] The avatar design for Kamota received a reaction from the editor, who recalled saying, "Wait... Seriously?". Mashiro strives to depict even the supporting characters as if they were truly alive to create the illusion for readers.[4]
Production Environment
Mashiro mentioned that around the time the third volume was released, they purchased a desk and chair. Before that, they used to place their LCD tablet on a low table and sit on the floor while working on this series. They also mentioned that they battles shoulder stiffness while creating the series[4]
English Volume Production
Mangamo, the official English translation team for the series, has confirmed that they will be releasing the English physical edition of My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 early in 2024. This release will bear the same title as the anime adaptation of the series, previously known as "Loving Yamada at Lv999," the series will now be published under the official title as per approved by the Japanese publisher of the series. More details regarding the production will be revealed during the panel at Anime Expo 2023 event, scheduled for July 3, 2023.[6]

According to Mashiro, regarding the book, they were told that the second volume would not be published unless it sold well.[4]

Collaborations and Events
On June 13, 2021, a collaboration between this series and Nanawo Akari took place, and the digital distribution of the song "Mahou" (Magic) began.[14] It is a love song inspired by this series and produced by DECO*27.[14] TMashiro provided original illustrations for the music video that was released on the same day.[14]
From February 14 to February 28, 2023, a Valentine's visual campaign was held at the underground 1st floor of Alpa in Sunshine City, Tokyo.[15]

It was revealed at the Aniplex Online Fest 2022, which was held on September 24, 2022, that the anime adaptation of the manga series My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, which was produced by Madhouse.[25] The adaptation was released on April 2, 2023.[26]
English Dubbed Information

On Tuesday, Crunchyroll made an announcement stating that they will initiate the streaming of the English dub for the anime series My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 which is an adaptation of Mashiro's manga series. The streaming is set to commence on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. EDT.
